Abstract: Frying oils or used edible oils cause impacts and serious problems for the environment by large-scale water pollution on the surface and also blockages in sewage networks. Our work at the ECOVA plant enabled us to follow the process of recovering used edible oils and putting them to good use through the cold saponification reaction. The plant collects and processes 15,000 litres per month of used edible oils and transforms them into a raw material for soap production. This work is completed by a characterisation of the oils and a comparison between the cold saponification used in ECOVA and the hot saponification carried out in the laboratory.
