Résumé:
Introduction : Medicinal plants are an inexhaustible source of bioactive compounds.
Crassula ovata is used in traditional Algerian medicine for the treatment of mouth ulcers.
Objective: The objective of this study is the valuation of the plant C. ovata, to evaluate the
biological activities of the methanol extract of the leaves and the formulation of an oral gel
based on this plant. Methods: The study of C. ovata involves phytochemical screening.
A determination of the total phenolic compound content and the evaluation of antioxidant,
anti-microbial, anti-acid, anti-reflux and anti-inflammatory activities. After that,the stage
of the development of an oral gel formulation. Results: the phytochemical screening test of
the methanol extract of the leaves showed the presence of polyphenols, alkaloids,
flavonoids, tannins, saponins, terpenoids, and free quinones. The results obtained showed
that the extracts have an anti-oxidant activity (IC50= 0.4 mg/ml), and anti-reflux effect.
For the anti-inflammatory activity, the methanol extract showed a 50% inhibition
percentage of BSA and egg albumin, or 35% at 125 µg/ml. These results indicate that the
extract has a anti-denaturation activity in comparison with Diclofenac. Conclusion: This
study proved that there are active compounds in the plant Crassula ovata, and this plant has
an antioxidant activity and an anti-denaturation properties.
