The use of agricultural wastes for the production of sustainable materials has received
considerable attention in recent years. This study focuses on the preparation, characterization
and application of activated carbon derived from olive stones using carbonization and physical
activation methods. The aim of this research is to investigate the potential of olive kernel-based
activated carbon as an adsorbent for the removal of methyl orange, a common organic pollutant,
from aqueous solutions.
The resulting activated carbon was characterized by measuring the iodine number to determine
adsorption capacity, and by performing X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis to study crystal
structure and surface morphology.
The results of the characterization revealed a high iodine value, indicating a significant
adsorption capacity of olive stone activated carbon. XRD analysis confirmed the success of the
carbonization process and the formation of activated carbon, revealing the presence of
characteristic peaks associated with carbonaceous materials.
The application potential of activated carbon was assessed by adsorption experiments.
Adsorption isotherms were obtained by measuring equilibrium adsorption capacity. In addition,
column adsorption experiments were carried out to evaluate adsorption performance in a
continuous flow system.
The results showed that olive kernel-based activated carbon exhibited excellent adsorption
capacity for methyl orange, with high removal efficiency. Column adsorption experiments
showed efficient removal of methyl orange from aqueous solution, confirming the potential of
activated carbon for wastewater treatment applications. |
